Iridium

Iridium is the first global satellite network for telecommunication.

Its 66 cross-linked Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites form a world-wide grid only 780 km (485 miles) above the Earth.

The Iridium telephone system provides true global spot beam coverage for satellite telephones using a GMPCS communication protocol, and it also offers unique cross-protocol roaming capabilities for all existing telephone systems.

The international Iridium consortium, which is funded by 19 major strategic investors around the world, developed and implemented the system, and is also responsible for its operation.
